Do I need an appointment?
No. We are first come, first served — just stop by during business hours.
What should I bring?
Bring your vehicle and a method of payment. If you have it, bring your DMV registration renewal notice — it helps the station verify your vehicle information.
Don’t have the notice? That’s okay — we can still help.
How long does a smog check take?
Timing depends on the vehicle and how busy we are, but we work to keep things moving. For the best time to come in, call 909-880-8000.
What vehicles need a smog check in California?
In general, California’s program covers most 1976 and newer gasoline/hybrid/alternative-fuel cars and light trucks, with exemptions (like older vehicles and some newer vehicles).
If you’re not sure, check your DMV paperwork or call us and we’ll help you confirm quickly.
Are any vehicles exempt?
Common exemptions include:
- Gasoline vehicles 1975 model year or older
- Gasoline vehicles less than eight model years old (generally exempt from biennial smog)
- Change of ownership exemption: four model years and newer generally do not require a transfer smog check
There are special cases, so if your paperwork is confusing, call us.
Visit the DMV website for more info.
Do I need a STAR station?
If your DMV renewal notice says “Smog Certification Required at a STAR station,” you must go to a STAR station.
If you’re unsure what your notice means, call us — we’ll tell you what to look for.
What if my check engine light is on?
A vehicle generally won’t pass if the check engine light (MIL) indicates an emissions-related problem. BAR recommends repairing it before testing.
If you’re not sure whether to come in yet, call 909-880-8000.
Do you smog diesel vehicles?
Diesel rules are different. California DMV notes that 1997 and older diesels and diesels over 14,000 lbs don’t follow the same smog inspection rule set as most passenger vehicles.
If you have a diesel, call us with the year and GVWR and we’ll confirm what applies.
How much does a smog check cost?
See our Pricing page for current rates and our Pass or Don’t Pay policy for certain vehicles.
What payments do you accept?
We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and Cash App.
Credit card processing fee: $1.50 per transaction.
I have a heavy-duty diesel truck — do you do Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check applies to nearly all diesel/alternative-fuel heavy-duty vehicles with GVWR over 14,000 lbs operating in California.
If you need a Clean Truck Check, check out our other business: Louie’s Truck Check.
